Tasting Notes

Mt Difficulty Ghost Town Chardonnay 2021 is handcrafted in very limited quantities showcasing the unique personality of the diverse microclimate and soils of Lowburn Valley.

A classic styled Chardonnay. Flinty, mineral notes, redolent of schist with ripe lemon curd and pastry. A fine and long palate, champions the acidity that Central Otago Chardonnay possess with yellow citrus, white peach and beeswax. An extended time on lees has brought a power and weight to the mid-palate with a long, elegant finish.

CELLARING POTENTIAL

We expect this wine to evolve with careful cellaring for another 10-15 years.

VINTAGE 2021

The 2021 growing season was a return to the enviable, lower stress conditions that Central Otago is famous for. We started with a warm spring, which gave the vines a good start. January was cooler and wetter, which replenished the soils and slowed growth, giving small, intensely flavoured grapes. By the time the beginning of harvest rolled around, we were just ahead of our long term average in terms of rate of ripening, and with fruit in fantastic condition. Yields were thankfully back to average in most areas, with only Bannockburn cropping slightly lower. This has given wines with excellent flavour and structure.

WINEMAKING CONSIDERATIONS

The fruit for our Ghost Town Chardonnay was hand-picked and handled in an oxidative fashion, destemmed and pressed straight to barrel. We fermented 100% of the juice in barrel with full solids using indigenous yeasts. 15% new French oak was used for the wine’s maturation, whilst maturing no lees stirring was utilised. The wine went through a full malolactic fermentation in spring, after which the barrels were stirred for a period. The wine was racked from barrel and filtered before being racked to tank to settle prior to being bottled, unfined, in July 2022.
